Ah, the Rebecca Minkoff Nikki Bag is like coming home. You know the feeling. No matter where you live or how long it has been since you’ve been home, more often than not when you do return home, you are able to breathe a sigh of relief. This is how I feel about Rebecca Minkoff’s Nikki Bag. No matter what color, I always breathe a pleasant sigh of relief.

Anyone out there familiar with Van Gogh’s painting Starry Night? This is a painting that I am infatuated with. It is whimsical, dream and thought provoking and just gorgeous. Well, I don’t know if you can see it, but there is something about the Novella Royale Clover Studded Tote that reminds me of Van Gogh’s painting.

CC Skye Janey Chain Fringe Hobo

CC Skye Janey Chain Fringe HoboAt first, I thought CC Skye Janey Chain Fringe Hobo wasn’t anything to write home about. We’ve seen plenty of oversized, long-handled fringe hobos, and we’ve seen lots of grey for fall/winter.

But then I realized that the word ‘chain’ was in the name of the bag, and I realized that I needed to take a look closer. When I did, I was pleasantly surprised, and it reminded me that the devil really is in the details.

Black leather? Gunmetal hardware? A hobo shape? Fashion meets function? There’s nothing I love more, obviously.

Well, except for seeing a bag I already love made even better, and that’s exactly what the new iteration of the Rebecca Minkoff Studded Devote Tote is.

Katherine Kwei Joyce Carryall

Some bags look great in photos and terrible in person, some look the same in both, and some look blah in photos and amazing in person. Even though the Katherine Kwei Joyce Carryall looks pretty good, if a tad sloppy, in its photos, I think it would look beyond amazing in person.

Obviously, two things jump out at first: the color and the knotting. Let’s talk about the knotting first, shall we?

Botkier Sydney Hobo

So far, this week has been good for bags, as in, I’ve found some pretty great bags to review. But when I came across this Botkier Sydney Hobo while innocently browsing online, it was clear that those blissful three days of good bags were over. I saw this bag, and I just thought, “What is up with that?” And I still don’t know.

I even checked out the scale photo of the bag against a silhouette, and that really, really made it worse. It just made me think that this bag was made for some person to carry two really big bottles of water on each side- and who does that? Hey Botkier, a plain sports bag would do just fine.

CC Skye Ashley Python Shoulder Bag

Are you ready for the weekend to start, or what? I certainly know I am! After a long week of work and unpacking boxes, it will be nice to sleep in, maybe hit the beach and definitely try and see more of this new city. So you better believe that I am on the look out for some new handbags to tote around in San Diego. One bag that would look great on my arm is the CC Skye Ashley Python Shoulder Bag. Amanda covered this bag in embossed natural snake. I loved it then and I think I might love it more in all black.

The gold-tone hardware really pops against the black. The functionality aspect of the bag is something I cannot get over; this is the kind of bag that can be toted all over just about any town. I mean, I don’t think I would sling this over my shoulder as I head to the beach, but I’m pretty sure you get where I am coming from here. The hardware is chunk and noticeable which I really like; it fits this big bag perfectly. Buy through Singer22 for $625.

See by Chloe Tag Along Hobo

I said just a few days ago that I had yet to find a See by Chloe bag that entirely tickled my fancy. And while that’s still pretty much true, I do like the See by Chloe Tag Along Hobo more than I’ve liked a lot of their bags in the past. And no, it’s not just because the name reminds me of Girl Scout cookies. But, of course, that doesn’t hurt.

I like the combination of matte black leather and navy blue patent – when done correctly, the unexpected use of both of those colors can look very hip and modern, and that’s exactly what they achieve here through the differences in texture. I’m not entirely sure about the double flaps that form the bag’s “closure,” since they might just mean that my bag is forever gaping open, but I’d have to try it in person to know. I also wish that the hobo strap was flat instead of rolled – do rolled handles fall off of anyone’s shoulders except mine? All in all, though, a solid effort. Buy through ShopBop for $650.

Alexander Wang Max Fanny Pack

Alexander Wang Max Fanny PackSo I thought that fanny packs were taboo to the fashion crowd, fit for only tacky tourists and cross-country RV trekkers. But Alexander Wang, is as usual, blazing his own trail rather than staying on the beaten path. But who ever thought he’d go so off that track as to create the Alexander Wang Max Fanny Pack? And it has been seemingly well received- I mean, it is a Shopbop Editor’s Pick.

Last time I checked, editors were good sources for upcoming trends, but I don’t want to carry a fanny pack, nor do I really have any desire to see the packs turn fashionistas into fashion victims. Those were my thoughts before I saw the bag on a model. The model carries the pack slung over her shoulder, so it looks like a normal hobo bag, albeit one with an interesting squared shape.

But in true Wang style, this bag is made of gorgeous pebbled leather with lots or roughly shiny bronze hardware. But I’m still not sure if I’m willing to carry a fanny pack, even for Alexander Wang. If you do, please you yourself a favor and don’t clip it around your waist. Buy through Shopbop for $790.

Kale Silla Grab Bag

We don’t talk that much about Kale brand bags on this site, but we probably should pay a little closer attention to them. They make modern, chic bags with clean lines and great colors – who doesn’t love that? I know that I do, considering my penchant for wearing dark clothes and brightly colored bags as somewhat of a de facto uniform in my daily life. And I think anyone that takes one look at the Kale Silla Grab Bag can guess what attracted me to it originally – the vibrant, nuanced shade of teal.

Sometimes I’m a bit wary of marbled leather since it usually means the leather is also shiny and a bit stiff, but it looks like the designers managed to give this bag a nice variation in color while keeping the bag reasonable supple and slouchy. I’d have to see the bag unstuffed to truly judge the shape and structure, but I suspect that it has a good bit more sag to it than this picture indicates, which is a great thing. The leather reminds me a bit of Balenciaga, and if that comparison is apt, then it’ll only get better with age. If you’re interested in the Bal look but don’t have the $1000+ to spend on a bag, this is a great alternative at a more reasonable price. Buy through Piperlime for $635.
