You need handbag knowledge, we have the resources to provide it.

And there’s an unending amount of handbag knowledge to be gained about the bags that the characters on Gossip Girl carry, so we thought we might drop a little on you today. It’s our job, after all.

In this week’s episode, we spotted Hilary Duff’s Olivia character carrying a bag by one of our favorites: the Rebecca Minkoff Fringe Darling Hobo. This bag is the slightly more complicated version of the lovely Rebecca Minkoff Darling Hobo, another bag that we absolutely love.

Any bag that’s carried on this show looks totally glam by association, and they do a great job of picking their wardrobe overall. But this bag is the real deal, we think. Buy through Luna Boston for $495.

From what I’ve seen, Judith Leiber clutches will usually do between two and six thousand dollars worth of damage. That’s a lot of scratch for a little sparkly clutch, but they’re extremely precise and often quite unique, so a lot of women love them. But what if you don’t have the type of money to spend on an evening bag you probably won’t use often, but you still want a little bit of glitter in your life? Then you buy the Anya Hindmarch Marano Glitter Clutch.

Sure, it’s not Swarovski-covered, but that comes at a price that not everyone is interested in paying. Instead, this little bag is covered in multicolor glitter that reminds me of the holiday cards we used to make out of construction paper, glue, and sequins during this time of year in elementary school. My only bit of trepidation is that I sincerely hope that this clutch is glazed. Glitter is like the herpes of the accessory world – once it gets on your skin, you’re never going to get rid of it.

But as long as the sparkle stays in place, I think this is a colorful, fun alternative to a more serious holiday clutch. And although I was a bit dubious of the multicolor glitter at first, the more I think about it, the more it seems like a good idea. Not only is it a lot younger-looking than it would be if the materials were simply silver or gold, but it could probably be coordinated with just as many things. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $425.

Not only has the L.A.M.B. Etoile Hobo been carried on Gossip Girl recently, but it’s also been seen on the arm of L.A.M.B. founder Gwen Stefani for months on end now. As such, we’re pleased to inform you that several color combinations have finally hit stores as part of the brand’s Holiday 2010 collection.

This bag has probably been more highly anticipated than any other in the young brand’s handbag history, and with good reason – it neatly refines L.A.M.B.’s sometimes erratic point of view into something that is totally wearable while still being edgy and different from the average black hobo.

My main criticism is that I’m not a huge fan of the quilted logo that covers the black leather, but since it’s tonal and fairly intricate, it’s not easily identifiable as a logo unless you look up close. I wish that they had incorporated texture through another type of quilting, but if it’s a logo, so be it.

My favorite part, though, as with this bag’s little cousin, is the acid green trim that stands out so brilliantly against the matte black leather. I don’t have a single thing that color in my wardrobe, but it reminds me of the shiny, neon trim on the sneakers I wore as a child in the 80s and early 90s, and a fashionable wink towards childhood never hurt anyone, now did it? Buy through ShopBop for $495.

I do like the tan leather color and the gold hardware. So, that’s a start. The West/Feren McCoy Bag is a versatile bag that can be carried by someone young or someone a bit older. Yes, I think that is what has pulled me in with this bag, the versatility.

While some of you might be hoping for the stud trend to end sooner rather than later, I don’t think it is going anywhere anytime soon. Yet, since it has been at the forefront for a bit now, at least designers are starting to realize what works and what looks simply ridiculous. The diamond-shaped studs at the front of the bag along with a metal ring and snap closure at the flap front pocket work well together. From the picture at hand you would never know there is a detachable shoulder strap option, but alas, there is. Per usual, I wouldn’t use the shoulder strap, instead I’d opt for the double rolled handles. Buy through Shopbop for $585.

I’m from the South and there are still fairly strict taboos here against wear white after Labor Day, but those rules seem so completely old fashioned in the face of beautiful, creamy winter whites, such as the stylish-yet-functional CC Skye Kate Hobo.

I have a personal bias towards bags with this shape and structure, but this looks like just the sort of thing to add some much-needed neutral contrast to a dark winter wardrobe.

The only part that gives me any pause at all is the sort of floppy closure at the top, but as long as the leather is sufficiently slouchy, that should work just fine. There’s also a sizable exterior pocket for your cell phone and keys, which is a must for me for any bag that I consider purchasing, and the braided handle is kind of snazzy, don’t you think? Buy through Bloomingdale’s for $595.

I really, really, really wish this image was a bit better. The Treesje Hendrix Shoulder Bag is actually a fabulous bag but the image doesn’t do it enough justice. But, let’s try and forget the image itself and let’s just focus on the bag. First and foremost, I love the color of the bag. The polished wine colored leather looks fabulous on this shoulder bag. However, I do have a question as to why Treesje decided to call this a shoulder bag.

With only a 5″ drop, there is close to no chance you’d see me trying to carry this bag on my shoulder. However, it would look great in my hand or placed in the crease of my elbow. But back to the color, I love how the gold tone hardware pops against the dark wine colored leather. Open up the bag and find plenty of pockets and a great keyfob. You know, I never used the keyfobs in my handbags before, but I started to last weekend and it is a genius idea! Anyone else agree? Buy through Luna Boston for $595.

I have. The collection has been popular and widely appreciated for some time now, but it never really made me go “OMG AMANDA WANT” like some other bags.

Slowly, though, the love for these bags has been creeping up on me. I’ve found myself to be quite a fan of the hobo, and now I think I’m also in love with the Linea Pelle Dylan Large Speedy.

These bags can be, at times, difficult to locate in stores, so if you’ve never had the pleasure of holding one in your hand, let me assure you: the leather is as soft and wonderful as it looks. Maybe even more so, if that’s possible. It’s also thick and luxe feeling, which is the perfect leather characteristic combination (so says me).

So when you combine that with a great dusty purple color and a functional shape that can be carried either as a satchel or a shoulder tote, I think I’m sold. It took me a long time to get here, but in this case, it’s the destination that counts. Buy through Luna Boston for $425.

And indeed, today is not one of those times.

The Rebecca Minkoff Love Letters Shoulder Bag is functional, on trend, and completely appealing. It must be a fairly daunting task for a fairly young designer to be expected to come up with new shapes and ideas for every season with a fairly rabid following salivating over what may come next, but Ms. Minkoff has pulled it off once again.

I must say that this bag at first seemed slightly more trend-conscious than I’ve come to expect of Minkoff’s bags, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In this case, it’s not bad at all – the purse still has the simplicity that we all know and love, with a slight bit of edge thrown in for good measure.

But because of the brand’s tendency towards simplicity, we don’t get anything too over-the-top, which is actually quite welcome. There are plenty of bags covered from tip to tail in zippers and fringe this season, and having a more muted option that still super luxe is something that I’m sure many women will appreciate. Buy through ShopBop for $495.

Ladies and gentleman, I’ve found a winner. A great, fashionable bag at a reasonable price! I wrote about the VBH Python Clutch with Crystal Detail yesterday on Purse Blog. One of the areas I focused on was the exquisite exotic skin; and it is true I do. But sometimes I find myself in an exotic-esque bag at without the exotic price. Thankfully, I came across the Cynthia Vincent Croco Berkeley Tote today and I am a very, very happy girl.

It should come as no surprise that with a large tote like this, the color is one of the first things I noticed. The teal color of the croco-embossed tote has been executed perfectly. Teal can be a color that is actually more difficult to succeed with than you would think. It can look drab just as easily as it can look almost neon. Neither of those hues are hues I like. So, again, the color is great. Moving on from that, this is a tote, a real tote: 20″ high, 23″ wide, 7″ deep. The double handle strap is adjustable which is great for a bag of this size. Open up the bag and you will find great colorful lining as well as a plethora of pockets to stuff your essentials into. Buy through Piperlime for $403.

There are few things more glamorous than a really great patent bag. Because of the overwhelming shininess, it can be hard to create one that’s not either tacky or mumsy, but when it happens, it’s beautiful. Which is exactly what the LAI Patent Pamela Top Handle is. The success or failure of a patent bag rests mainly on two features: color and shape. Luckily, this bag hits them both out of the park.

Because it’s so shiny, patent can look really cheap in the wrong shade. The deep wine color of this bag is anything but inexpensive looking, and I can’t help thinking how great it would look with one of my typically black cold weather outfits. During the winter, my main source of color is my accessories, so bags in vivid hues such as this one are a must for me.

And then there’s the shape – a bit of retro glam, a bit of faux slouch, and a lot originality. Another problem that patent often has is that it looks rigid and untouchable, but the tailoring and tucking on this bag allow it to look like it has a bit of movement, even though I’m sure it probably doesn’t. When you combine that with the monochromatic beauty of the lizard handles, you’ve got something that’s entirely unique. In a bag market where nearly everything is derivative, that says a heck of a lot. Buy through Bluefly for $537.
